What Is a WiFi Speed Test?

A WiFi speed test measures the performance of your wireless internet connection — the speed at which data travels between your device and the internet via your WiFi router. This is distinct from your raw broadband line speed, which is best measured via a wired Ethernet connection.

Our free wireless internet speed test checks your WiFi download speed, WiFi upload speed, ping latency, and jitter in real time — no app or sign-up needed.

Use this WiFi connection speed test to diagnose buffering, lag, or dropped calls on your home or office wireless network.

Results from our router speed test show how fast your WiFi is performing right now. If your WiFi speed is significantly lower than your broadband plan speed, the bottleneck is likely your router, WiFi signal strength, or channel congestion — not your ISP.

For the most accurate WiFi bandwidth test, place yourself in the same room as your router, close other apps, and run the test 2–3 times. Compare with our internet speed test via Ethernet to isolate WiFi vs broadband performance.

Our online WiFi speed test works on all devices — iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, and Chromebook.

What Affects Your WiFi Speed?

Understanding what slows down your wireless connection helps you improve your WiFi speed fast.

Router Location & Distance

The further your device is from the router, the weaker the WiFi signal and the slower your wireless speed. Walls, floors and large appliances further reduce signal strength.

WiFi Frequency Band (2.4 vs 5 GHz)

2.4 GHz WiFi travels further but is slower and more congested. 5 GHz WiFi is faster but has shorter range. Modern routers support both — connect to 5 GHz for the fastest WiFi speeds.

Router Age & Standard

Old routers support slower WiFi standards (e.g. WiFi 4 / 802.11n). Upgrading to a WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E router can dramatically increase your wireless internet speed.

Network Congestion

Too many devices connected to your WiFi at once reduces speed for everyone. Smart TVs, game consoles, and smart home devices all consume bandwidth even when idle.

Channel Interference

Neighbouring networks broadcasting on the same WiFi channel compete with your signal. Use a WiFi analyser app to find the least congested channel and switch to it.

Router Security & Firmware

An outdated router with no WPA3 encryption could have unauthorised devices draining your bandwidth. Update firmware and check connected devices in your router admin panel.

Is Your WiFi Speed Fast Enough?

Use this guide to understand whether your WiFi speed test results are fast enough for your online activities.

WiFi Speed Rating Supports Not Suitable For
0–10 Mbps Poor Basic web browsing, emails 4K streaming, video calls, gaming
10–25 Mbps Fair HD streaming, standard video calls Multiple 4K streams, online gaming
25–100 Mbps Good 4K streaming, online gaming, WFH Heavy multi-user households
100–300 Mbps Fast 4K multi-stream, large downloads, game servers Very few limitations
300 Mbps+ Excellent Everything — entire households, smart homes Nothing — future-proof WiFi speed

How to Improve Your WiFi Speed

If your WiFi speed test shows slow results, these tips will help you boost your wireless internet speed right now.

Move Your Router to a Central Location

Place your router in a central, elevated spot with no obstructions. Avoid corners, cupboards, or areas surrounded by thick walls. The closer you are to the router, the faster your WiFi speed.

Upgrade to WiFi 6 Router

WiFi 6 (802.11ax) delivers up to 4× faster wireless speeds than WiFi 5 and handles more simultaneous devices better. If your router is 3+ years old, an upgrade can dramatically improve WiFi speed.

Use the 5 GHz WiFi Band

On dual-band routers, connect speed-sensitive devices to the 5 GHz network. It's significantly faster than 2.4 GHz for nearby devices, though with shorter effective range.

Reduce Connected Devices

Too many devices on one WiFi network causes congestion. Disconnect devices you're not using, or upgrade to a WiFi 6E or mesh network system for large households.

Reboot Your Router Monthly

Routers accumulate cache and can suffer memory leaks over time. A monthly restart keeps your WiFi performance at its peak and clears any temporary configuration issues.

Install a WiFi Mesh System

If you have coverage dead spots or need fast WiFi across a large home, a mesh WiFi system provides consistent high-speed wireless internet in every room.

WiFi Speed Test FAQs

Open this page on any device connected to your WiFi network and tap "Test My WiFi". Our free WiFi speed test will measure your wireless download speed, upload speed, ping, and jitter in under 60 seconds. No app download or sign-up required.

For single users, 25 Mbps WiFi download speed is adequate for streaming HD video and browsing. Households with multiple users benefit from 100 Mbps+. For 4K streaming and gaming on multiple devices simultaneously, 200–300 Mbps WiFi speed is ideal.

WiFi speed is always lower than wired speed due to wireless signal loss, interference, and distance from the router. Your WiFi speed depends on your router's capability, the WiFi standard (WiFi 5 vs WiFi 6), distance, and channel congestion. Run a wired speed test to compare.

Open Safari on your iPhone and visit this page. Tap "Test My WiFi" to run a full WiFi speed test directly from your iPhone. Make sure WiFi is enabled in Settings → WiFi and that you're connected to the correct network for accurate results.

Open Chrome on your Android phone and visit this page. Tap "Test My WiFi" to run the wireless speed test. No app download required — our WiFi speed test works directly in any Android browser.

Internet speed (broadband speed) is the speed of your connection to your ISP, best measured via Ethernet cable. WiFi speed is the wireless portion of that connection from your router to your device. WiFi speed will always be lower than or equal to your broadband speed — it cannot be faster than your ISP provides.

Our WiFi speed test is highly accurate for measuring real-world wireless performance. For the best results: stay close to your router, close other apps, disconnect other devices, and run the test multiple times and average the results.
