Free VIN Decoder for Every U.S. Vehicle Brand

Our brand-specific VIN decoder pages are powered by the same official NHTSA vPIC DecodeVinValuesExtended API that runs the official government decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder. Each page includes a live VIN decoder, brand-specific VIN structure guide, common recall history, and detailed FAQs — all optimized to help you decode your vehicle quickly and accurately.

What makes a brand's VIN unique?

While all U.S. VINs follow the ISO 3779 standard (17 characters, WMI + VDS + VIS), the Vehicle Descriptor Section (positions 4–8) is brand-specific. Each manufacturer submits a "565 submittal" to NHTSA defining exactly how their VINs encode body style, engine, and trim information. That's why a Honda Accord VIN and a Ford F-150 VIN use the same format but encode information differently in those middle positions.

Why use a brand-specific decoder?

Brand-specific pages provide context for what each character means for that manufacturer — including which plants that brand uses, which model years had significant recalls, and which consumer complaints are most common for that make. Combined with live NHTSA data, this gives you the most complete picture of any vehicle before you buy.
